PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers added to their future defensive line room on the same day they lost a major piece of the current position group.

Trevor Sommers, a 2025 defensive end from Florida, announced on Twitter that he had committed to Pitt over offers from UCF, Maryland, West Virginia, Illinois, Syracuse, Colorado and Indiana, making him the first verbal commit of the cycle for the Panthers.

Sommers is, at the moment, an unrated prospect from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and plays his high school ball at powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

The 6'2 and 240-pound edge rusher accounted for 45 total tackles, 16 tackles for a loss, 13 sacks and 18 quarterback hurries in just nine games during his junior season, during which he helped St. Thomas Aquinas earn their third straight state championship. Michigan had shown interest during his recruitment process as well.

Legendary defensive line coach Charlie Partridge is on his way out, off to the NFL to take a job with the Indianapolis Colts, but he left a parting gift for the Panthers in the form of Sommers, their first commit from the class of 2025.
