Raiders Hire Former Pitt QB
PITTSBURGH -- Former Pitt Panthers quarterback Luke Getsy didn't have to go long without an NFL coaching job this offseason after he was fired by the Chicago Bears.
Getsy, one of a few former Pitt players and coaches earning new jobs around the NFL this offseason, is set to become the next offensive coordinator of the Las Vegas Raiders, according to a report from Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.
Getsy has been linked to open offensive coordinating positions with the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots in addition to the Saints.
The Raiders appeared locked in on hiring former Cardinals and Texas Tech head coach and current USC assistant Kliff Kingsbury to fill this position but he spurned them at the last minute and is now in line to become the next offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders.
The Bears fired Getsy alongside quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko and receivers coach Tyke Tolbert, running backs coach Omar Young and assistant tight ends coach Tim Zetts earlier this month. Chicago ranked 23rd and 18th in points and 28th and 20th in yards per game in each of the two seasons with Getsy coordinating the offense.
Getsy, a Munhall, Pennsylvania native and Steel Valley High School alumnus, began his college career at Pitt, earning a scholarship to play quarterback coming out of high school in 2003. He then transferred to Akron after two years with the Panthers and led the Zips to its first conference championship and bowl game appearance in program history while breaking 24 school records in the process.
Getsy was a graduate assistant for the Panthers during the 2010 season and made other stops at Akron, West Virginia Wesleyan, IUPUI, Western Michigan and Mississippi State during his college coaching career. In the NFL, he's coached for the Green Bay Packers in addition to the Bears.
