PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers are one of seven finalists to land a verbal commitment from a high school wide receiver, the player announced earlier this week. 

Jahmari Powell-Wonson, a three-star wideout from Baltimore, Maryland and Baltimore City College, listed Pitt in the top seven he released on social media. Old Dominion, Liberty, Maryland, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Charlotte rounded out the group of finalists. 

247Sports considers Powell-Wonson the No. 120 wide receiver in the class of 2024 and the No. 27 player in Maryland for this year. Rivals has him two spots higher as the No. 27 prospect in his state. He holds 14 offers in all from all the programs in his top seven, plus North Carolina, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Temple and others. Ohio State, Penn State and Ole Miss have shown interest. Powell-Wonson visited State College, Pennsylvania earlier this spring. 

The Panthers' 10-man class of 2024 has grown quickly and rocketed up national rankings at the same time. The Panthers are currently eighth in Rivals' national team rankigns.

Stephen Thompson graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications and political science from Pitt in April 2022 after spending four years as a sports writer and editor at The Pitt News, the University of Pittsburgh's independent, student-run newspaper.  He primarily worked the Pitt men's basketball beat, and filled in on coverage of football, volleyball, softball, gymnastics and lacrosse, in addition to other sports as needed.
