DALLAS – The energy was high on both ends of the floor for SMU midway through the first half as the Mustangs rushed out to a commanding lead against Western Illinois.

That was until it came to an abrupt halt. With 10:47 left in the half, Lanier, son of head coach Rob Lanier, battled for a rebound under the WIU goal and crumpled to a heap near the right block. He then grabbed for his knee after it became clear he could no longer get up.

Lanier had to be helped off the floor by the training staff. Several minutes later had had his knee in a heavy brace as the staff helped him to an exercise bike where he spent the remainder of the half.

It was the guard's first action of the season. Before the injury he had four points, one rebound and one assist in six minutes of work.
