DALLAS — SMU fans may get a chance to cheer on one of their own when the Olympic trials get cranked up in mid-June.

Jack Forrest of the Mustangs' men's swim team, recorded a qualifying time in the 400 free during Day 1 of the SMU Invite — in which the Olympic-sized, eight-lane indoor pool was on full display for the time trials portion of the four day invitational that includes Hawaii, Yale, BYU and Drury.

Forrest became one of four Mustangs to finish in first place at the event when he logged a time of 3:55.57, meeting the qualifying standard for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials by .02 seconds. The time is fast enough to have finished Top 30 in the world during the 2020 Olympics.

However, the U.S. if much faster in the sport than all but a handful of countries in the world. To catch Jake Mitchell, who was the slowest American in the qualifying heats at the last Olympic games, Forrest will need to continue to trim that time down to 3:45.38. It should be noted that Mitchell finished with the second fastest time at the U.S. National Championships in 2019 with a time of 3:48, which makes the number Forrest needs to achieve a little more arbitrary as some pools swim faster than others.

The 2024 U.S Olympic Swimming Trials will take place from June 15-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana in a new 9-day format.

As for the SMU Invite, competition continues through Saturday. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m., with diving and finals following at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively up through Friday. The final day of the invite's schedule differs — preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., diving at 12 p.m., 1650's early heats predicted to start at 3:45 p.m., with finals at 6 p.m. The event is also available for streaming via PonyUp TV.
