Gamecock Baseball Suffers Notable Drop In Polls After Recent Series Loss
Mark Kingston and South Carolina's baseball team built up a lot of cushion in terms of how national voters viewed the Gamecocks after they started off the season 29-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play. Fast forward to today, and that leeway has been completely eradicated, as the Gamecocks have lost four of their last five conference series and eight of their last eleven games overall.
Injuries, at first, were largely pointed to as the reason why South Carolina was struggling mightily. While that was valid at the beginning of this recent slump, the Gamecocks have now strung together multiple weekend performances that have left fans and national analysts shaking their heads, as a team that was obliterating everyone in their path just one month ago is now having trouble beating almost any team on their schedule.
Pollsters had been reluctant to drop the Gamecocks to a significant degree, until this week, as every single major poll now has them outside the top 10, except D1Baseball.com, who slotted them right at No. 10. South Carolina is now officially in do-or-die mode when it comes to their regional host hopes, as there's no question that they now have to take care of business against Charlotte on Tuesday night and win their last regular season series against a hot Tennessee ball club or else they'll be on the road in the postseason.
