South Carolina Baseball Season Preview: Starting Pitching Rotation
If you're a college baseball program looking to compete for a conference or national title, you must possess a few key components to make such a deep run; great fielding, situational hitting, and a competent pitching staff. Mark Kingston and the South Carolina Gamecocks have a plethora of options to choose from when it comes to their starting pitching rotation, which for this sport in particular, is a great problem to have.
Will Sanders
Regarding potential at the next level, Sanders has been viewed as South Carolina's best pitcher over the past two seasons. Sanders will be the "tone-setter" for this pitching staff, possessing a deep arsenal of pitches, as the SEC possesses a high volume of other top-flight pitchers that the Gamecocks will have to contend with throughout conference play.
Noah Hall
Hall was one of the biggest bright spots for South Carolina in 2022, and while not equipped with the same toolbox as Sanders, Hall is a bit of a throwback in terms of his ability to consistently pitch deep into ballgames while finding ways to get out of jams when they occur. Noah was drafted in the last round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft last summer but decided to come back to Columbia feeling that there was unfinished business.
Jack Mahoney
Mahoney has had the most unique college career out of the aforementioned pitchers, as Tommy John surgery in his freshman campaign forced him to play more in the infield in 2022. After deciding to return to the mound this offseason, there's been some noise around Jack's velocity and his chance to contribute in a big way in 2023.
