Series Primer: South Carolina vs Bethune-Cookman
South Carolina's Baseball team has been on a tear in the past week, having won four straight games against in-state opponents, including their arch-rivals in the Clemson Tigers. After demolishing the USC-Upstate Spartans in Greenville on Wednesday night, the Gamecocks return to the friendly confines of Founders Park when they take on the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.
The Wildcats have won each of their three weekend series' to this point in the season but have been blown out each time they've played a Power 5 opponent, losing to both UCF and Florida State by a combined total of 19 runs to one. When looking at Bethune-Cookman's batting lineup, they're a group that both lacks power and doesn't play a strong brand of small-ball, meaning that they have to be able to string multiple hits together at one time to be able to plate runs.
Infielder Robert Moya has been the best hitter on the team so far this season, batting .349 on the plate, leading the team in extra-base hits, and ranking second on the Wildcats' squad in slugging percentage. Regarding Bethune-Cookman's pitching, the staff is primarily led by two starters in Daniel Gaviria and Nolan Santos, along with reliever Dale Michaud, who all possess an ERA of 1.93 or less and have a combined strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.90.
Due to potential inclement weather, both teams have decided it would be best to do a doubleheader on Saturday, something that the university announced on Friday afternoon.
The Gamecocks should carry an aggressive mindset to the field this weekend, as it would take many factors falling the Wildcats' way for Bethune-Cookman to have any shot of winning the series.
