The No. 6 ranked South Carolina baseball team is set for a three-game series in Nashville, TN, against the No. 4 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores. . While South Carolina is the winningest team in baseball this season, they have not yet achieved the #1 overall ranking they deserve. For the team to defeat the 2022 College World Series Runner-Ups, South Carolina's explosive batting and electrifying pitching will need to shine early.

Key To The Series

South Carolina and Vanderbilt are excellent on the mound, boasting the fourth and fifth-lowest team ERAs in the country, respectively. There is a bit of a scoring gap between the two teams, as South Carolina is seventh in the nation in runs scored, while Vanderbilt is tied for 25th. These stats show that each team is great on both sides of the plate, but Vanderbilt's batting is not on the same elite tier as the Gamecocks. This gives Gamecock pitchers an advantage and opportunity to make life difficult for the Commodore batters, a feat that would likely result in a series win for South Carolina.

Player Spotlight

  • P Will Sanders - ERA: 4.72 | W/L: 2-1 | AVG: .242
  • P Jack Mahoney - ERA: 3.12 | W/L: 3-0 | AVG: .250
  • 3B Ethan Petry - AVG: .449 | OB%: .507 | HR: 16
  • 1B Gavin Casas - AVG: .284 | OB%: .444 | HR: 16

Will Sanders and Jack Mahoney were announced as the starting pitchers in games 1 and 2. The duo doesn't have the most exceptional ERAs, but more often than not have been able to keep scoring to a minimum which allows for high-octane batters Ethan Petry and Gavin Casas to put games out of reach.

The series looks to be competitive and highly anticipated from both an SEC and national perspective. Vanderbilt has been one of the top baseball programs in the nation for years, and South Carolina looks to be back on the national scene with their performance this season. While a series win will not come easily, the Gamecocks have all the pieces necessary to dominate even the No. 4 ranked Commodores.
