South Carolina's Baseball team has been one of the great stories of college baseball this season, having seemingly undergone a resurrection in one year's time after such turmoil was hanging over the program this past Spring. The Gamecocks have reminded the sport why they're considered one of the most historic programs, recently dispatching No. 3 Florida this past weekend to grab sole possession of the lead in the SEC standings.

This surge of nostalgia for Gamecock baseball fans has lead the university to make the decision that now is the perfect time to honor one of the most accomplished players to ever dawn the garnet and black threads, as it was announced on Tuesday afternoon that former pitcher Kip Bouknight will have his jersey retired before Friday's game against the Auburn Tigers.

Bouknight was one of the best pitchers in college baseball when he played in Columbia, as he won the Golden Spikes Award in the 2000 season, being recognized by USA baseball as the top amateur baseball player that year. Statistically, Kip holds the school record for career wins with 45, and career strikeouts with 457. Bouknight will become just the third former member of the Gamecock baseball program to have his jersey retired, joining former head coach Ray Tanner and legendary Gamecock pitcher Earl Bass.
