Mark Kingston and South Carolina are probably off to the hottest start out of any team in college baseball through the first five days of the new season and continued their torrid stretch of play on Wednesday night with a twelve-run win over Queen's university. The game featured another balanced showing by the Gamecocks' batting lineup due to their collective plate discipline and timely hitting and power hitting with runners on base.

Caleb Denny lead the way for South Carolina at the plate on Wednesday night, batting in five runs home through two doubles hit to the right-centerfield gap. Regarding raking the ball, Gavin Casas was the most impressive Gamecock on Wednesday, collecting three hits in total, which included a double and this opposite-field homer in the bottom of the third inning.

The Gamecocks combined their hitting onslaught against the Royals with their ability to lay off pitches outside the strike zone, leading to seven walks drawn by five South Carolina batters. On the pitching mound, the Gamecocks saw another right-handed pitcher make a long-awaited return to the mound, as James Hicks started a game for the first time since tearing his right UCL on February 26th last year.

Besides some minor hiccups in the third inning, Hicks was extremely efficient, as he pitched five innings, giving up just four total base runners, all while striking out five batters and throwing just 55 pitches to home plate.

Behind James, pitching coach Justin Parker saw some encouraging signs from three underclassmen in Matthew Becker, Austin Williamson, and Dylan Eskew, who only gave up four base runners in the final four innings but didn't allow a single hit to the Royals' batting lineup.

Mark Kingston and his squad haven't played the highest levels of competition in college baseball to this point, but what they've been able to show in every aspect of the game consistently has been nothing short of outstanding. As the season progresses, these kinds of performances will quickly make talking heads turn their attention to the Gamecocks.
