FINAL: Solid Pitching Helps Gamecocks Get 5-1 Opening Day Win Over Miami (OH)
On opening day finally arrived for the Gamecocks, who got their first win against Miami (OH) with a big 2nd inning, getting home five runs and solid pitching. Cole Messina started the hitting with South Carolina's first hit of the year with a double down the first base line and would be the Gamecocks' first run of the season after a Talmadge LeCroy RBI single. However, Carolina's bats would go cold, getting only one hit from the third inning.
The Pitching staff was on it today, though, so while the bats weren't at their best, Eli Jones, who was credited with the win, and Chris Veach, who came in at the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded, got out of the jam and again in the top of the eighth. Garrett Gainey would also come in and get out of a jam in the top of the 9th. Coach Mark Kingston will want to see the bats come alive more tomorrow and be better with their situational hitting, leaving nine men on base and 4 for 11 with runners in scoring position today.
