ANALYSIS: A Look At South Carolina's 2024 Baseball Schedule
While South Carolina's basketball programs have been drawing the majority of Gamecock fans' attention over the past three months, it's time to get ready for baseball season. Mark Kingston and his squad are looking to get the program back to Omaha for the first time in 12 years after appearing in the Super Regional round last season, breaking a four-season-long drought.
Before I get to how I think Carolina will perform this Spring, let's take a look at the team's schedule:
Three Game Series (In Chronological Order)
Vs. Miami (OH)
Vs. Belmont
Vs. Clemson (Home-neutral-away)
Vs. Longwood
@ Ole Miss
Vs. Vanderbilt
@ Alabama
Vs. Texas A&M
@ Florida
Vs. Arkansas
Vs. Kentucky
@ Missouri
Vs. Georgia
@ Tennessee
Midweek Games (In Chronological Order)
Vs. Winthrop
Vs. Queens
Vs. Gardner-Webb
Vs. The Citadel
Vs. Davidson
Vs. Georgia State
@ USC Upstate (Fluor Field | Greenville, SC)
Vs. Presbyterian
Vs. Georgia Southern
Vs. North Carolina (Truist Field | Charlotte, NC)
@ The Citadel
Vs. East Tennessee State
@ Winthrop
Looking at the non-conference slate, outside of their archrivals, the Clemson Tigers, South Carolina, won't face a single team that participated in the NCAA Regionals this past Spring, meaning that just like last season, they should roll through the majority of those contests. Because baseball can be fickle, I'll say they drop two midweek games, but this team's overall experience and talent should be enough to limit bad losses.
As far as SEC play is concerned, no schedule is easy in this league, but the Gamecocks face the unfortunate reality of having to play four of the five teams who received first-place votes in their respective division in the SEC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll; those teams are Florida, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Arkansas, with Mark Kingston's team getting to play the Commodores and Razorbacks at home and the other two teams on the road.
While I'm not going to predict a specific win-loss record, I believe South Carolina will drop 3 three-game series this Spring (@ Florida, Vs. Arkansas, and @ Tennessee). Should the season play out in that fashion, the Gamecocks would almost certainly be a regional host and would be right in the thick of the conversation regarding a Top 8 national seed, which would allow them to host a Super Regional if they got to that point.
Two things are for sure: Opening day is just seven days away, and this season will be fun to follow.
