South Carolina's Win Over LSU Symbolic Of Program's Historic Growth
Last night, Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks sent an emphatic message to the rest of women's college basketball: we're still the team to beat in this sport. What got lost in the shuffle in Carolina's come-from-behind win against the LSU Tigers was the fact that the program secured its 1,000th career win.
For the Gamecocks, they probably didn't take too much time to acknowledge the fact that the program now has won 1,000 games. If anything, the coaches and players probably saw something on social media, thought 'that's cool,' and have mentally moved on to their upcoming game against Vanderbilt. Assuming that's the case, we'll take on the duty of putting that number into context.
While no longer accurate (as the information is outdated), at least 13 women's college basketball programs have eclipsed the 1,000-win mark. South Carolina joins the likes of Tennessee, UConn, Stanford, Texas, Maryland, and Notre Dame in this elite company.
The program had 580 wins when Dawn Staley took over the reins in 2008, meaning she is responsible for 42 percent of the program's wins. Since the beginning of the 2018-19 season, South Carolina has won 170 games (17 percent of their all-time wins), which tied for the most wins in all of women's college basketball throughout that stretch, with UConn being the only team able to match them.
South Carolina has won an average of 31.2 games over their past nine seasons (not including this current one), which means at this current rate, the Gamecocks will surpass 1,500 wins some time in 2039.
