Gamecocks Remain Undefeated After 98-36 Blowout Win Over Kentucky
The South Carolina Women's team, led by head coach Dawn Staley, hosts the Kentucky Wildcats tonight, looking to notch their 4th SEC win. The Gamecocks came into tonight's game as nearly 45-point favorites, and they didn't disappoint, starting out a bit sluggish but took off in the second quarter and never looking back as they beat Kentucky by a final of 98-36
The Gamecocks got out to a sluggish start in the first quarter offensively. While shooting the ball well, they turned it over early, allowing Kentucky to keep it close after the first quarter. However, they would start the following quarter on a 14-0 run, extending their halftime led to 25 points, and Kamilla Cardoso dominated when she was on the court, finishing the half with 8 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks.
Raven Johnson and the Gamecocks continued to dominate into the second half, opening up the third quarter on a 22-2 run and outscoring the Wildcats in the final three quarters 47-12. There was also one point during the third quarter where South Carolina hit ten straight shots. While the offense was entertaining in the second half, the defense was even more impressive, forcing 15 turnovers and allowing only 15 points in the half all while holding the wildcats to just 14% shooting.
Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks continue to be a standard in women's college basketball, now sitting at 16-0 and 4-0 in conference play, being the last undefeated team in the country. South Carolina Will be on the road for their next two games, with the first stop being in College Station to face off against the 14-3 Texas A&M Aggies.
