Three-Point Barrage Leading Charge For Gamecocks In 7-0 Start

South Carolina's men's basketball team is off to their best start since their Final Four run in the 2016-17 season, and three-pointers are a big reason why.

Friday night was a fun one for Lamont Paris and South Carolina's men's basketball team. They accomplished multiple different feats in their matchup against a formidable 6-1 George Washington squad: they maintained their undefeated mark, got revenge on a team that had trounced them one season ago, and also broke a single-game team record for three-pointers made with 18.

As a team this season, the Gamecocks are shooting 40.2 percent from behind the arc, the 14th best mark in college basketball and, as of right now, their highest mark since the 2018-19 season when Carolina shot 36.6 percent from three-point range. The most dangerous aspect about Paris' squad is that it's not just one or two players that hit three-point shots: almost everyone in their typical starting lineup can hit shots from 20 feet plus.

Looking back at the 2018-19 team that I referenced earlier, that team finished 16-15 in the regular season, but also won 11 of their 18 conference matchups. Considering the easier non-conference slate this Gamecock squad possesses, and the deeper levels of experience, this team could have a chance to win 20 or more games for the first time since... the 2016-17 season.

South Carolina's upcoming game will take place against their archrivals in the Clemson Tigers, who are also undefeated, but rank 227th nationally out of 351 division teams in three-point percentage defense, letting their opponents hit shots from behind the arc at a 33.6 percent clip. Needless to say, this could be something to watch once again next Wednesday night.
