Spencer Rattler, Gamecocks' Offense Ready For Spring Practice

Following a solid season by Spencer Rattler, the South Carolina Gamecocks' offense seeks to improve through toughness and a learning mentality.

After a 73-day break, the South Carolina Gamecocks are back and ready to build off their 8-5 season in 2022. Spencer Rattler leads the way for Shane Beamer's Gamecocks, having accounted for 11 touchdowns and 1,044 passing yards over his last three contests.

This performance level may become the norm for him, with help from exciting new Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains. Loggains was Arkansas' Tight Ends coach most recently, with prior experience as an Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach for NFL teams: Jets, Dolphins, Bears, Browns, and Titans. Overall, South Carolina's fanbase is intrigued to see how his NFL experience will translate into wins and development for Rattler and the Gamecocks.

One player that should be heavily involved is returning WR Antwane Wells Jr, who put up great numbers in his first year in Columbia, leading the Gamecocks in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. With Senior wideouts Jalen Brooks and Josh Vann departing, Wells Jr. has a chance at an even higher target share and a season reminiscent of Gamecock greats like Alshon Jeffery and Sidney Rice.

The running back room is also chock-full of new personnel, as the departures of Marshawn Lloyd, Jaheim Bell, and Lovasea Carroll will make for a crucial Spring in configuring the depth chart. Senior transfer Mario Anderson appears to be the lead man in this position battle, as he rushed for 1,560 yards and 19 touchdowns in just ten games last season at division two Newberry College. Junior Juju McDowell looks to prove his case for an expanded role at running back as well, having shown remarkable improvement in terms of rushing efficiency from 2021 to 2022. With the departures, as mentioned earlier, McDowell has the most SEC experience in this Gamecock offense. Freshman signee Dontavius Braswell will also make his case for playing time once he arrives in the Summer, which will ultimately breed the competition that Shane Beamer continuously seeks in his program.

No matter how South Carolina's depth chart shakes out, we can expect another strong year for the Gamecocks. Heisman hopeful Spencer Rattler hit his stride last November, and Shane Beamer has proven to be a winner, having improved South Carolina's record each of his first two seasons. This dynamic duo, along with new personnel acquisitions and star receiver Antoine Wells Jr. will be integral to achieving Beamer's team goal of furthering a winning culture through physicality, a learning mentality, and toughness.
