South Carolina Offers Portal Linebacker From Arkansas State
When it comes to how major college football programs approach the transfer portal, there are a couple of different ways to utilize it. You can use it to plug in holes on your depth chart, or add to what you already have at certain positions. It appears that Shane Beamer and South Carolina's coaching staff are doing the latter with this latest public offer, as Arkansas State linebacker Javante Mackey took to X on Monday afternoon to let everyone know that the Gamecocks are interested.
In 2023, Mackey finished second on the team in total tackles with 82, which included 7 tackles for loss and two sacks. He also added a pass deflection and fumble recovery to boot. Mackey has three years of eligibility remaining due to the fact that he redshirted in 2022.
With the Gamecocks employing more of a 3-3-5 look at the end of the 2023 season, this could be a sign that the defensive formation is here to stay in Columbia, considering how many guys are expected to return at the position.
