OPINION: KJ Jefferson Transferring To South Carolina Would Make Sense

South Carolina's Football program is reportedly a potential destination for KJ Jefferson if he transfers, and it's a move that would make a lot of sense.

It's only Wednesday afternoon, the week after the conclusion of the 2023 regular season in college football, and several quarterbacks with a plethora of starting experience have entered their name into the transfer portal. One player who could soon be joining that group is Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson, who is expected to enter the portal based on multiple reports from 247Sports before he took to Instagram himself to dispel the rumblings, stating he "hasn't made a decision."

One school that reportedly could be a frontrunner for KJ should he enter is South Carolina, and when you think about it, the hypothetical move would be great for both parties. Here are the reasons why:

1) The Loggains Connection

South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains served as Arkansas' tight end coach in 2021 and 2022 before arriving in Columbia. While not a part of the same room at all times, one would have to imagine Jefferson had a relationship with the Arkansas alum during that stretch. Loggains also has tangible evidence of his ability to develop quarterbacks based on Spencer Rattler's perceivable improvement in 2023, and the Arizona native has made it clear that his play-caller helped him tremendously.

2) That Daunting 2024 Conference Slate

Next season begins a new era in the SEC, as Oklahoma and Texas will officially join the conference, and the scheduling model will drastically change. This will result in the Gamecocks playing four opponents from the 'old' SEC West: Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M. Throw in Missouri, and you have five opponents that KJ Jefferson is quite familiar with, as he's faced those teams annually since 2021. KJ would, therefore, have a solidified knowledge bank on the schemes and athletes that those programs possess and would theoretically give South Carolina a better shot to win those games because of it.

3) More Development For Sellers

The biggest obstacle for some when thinking about this situation is the possibility that highly touted freshman LaNorris Sellers would wait another season to play. Think about this for a second. If Jefferson enters the portal, Shane Beamer and the offensive staff would have a chance to bring a quarterback of a similar mold, a massive and athletic specimen of a quarterback with 25 career starts to his name and someone who could pass along invaluable knowledge to the South Carolina native. Sellers would have to be okay with it, but it would be a great transition plan for the Gamecocks at the quarterback position.
