When South Carolina and North Carolina face off against one another on Saturday night, all you'll hear about is the matchup between Spencer Rattler and Drake Maye, along with phrases like the Carolina Border War, the Battle of the Carolinas, and so forth. However, one area where the respect will stick throughout the rest of this week and Saturday night is the admiration Mack Brown and Shane Beamer have for one another.

On Monday afternoon, Mack Brown met with the media to preview this weekend's matchup and discuss the latest about his team. In his opening statement, he lauded what Shane Beamer had done in his short in Columbia.

"Shane Beamer's done a tremendous job at South Carolina - He's got a lot of energy. They had a lot of momentum leaving the season last year that we didn't, and they've done a great job recruiting. It's a very difficult opener."

Mack's relationship with Shane Beamer is pretty different compared to most other coaches because Brown coached against Shane's father, Frank Beamer, on several occasions. Thus, every game where he coaches against the younger Beamer is a full-circle moment for the College Football Hall of Famer.

"I'm really proud of Shane, and I know we all love our kids, [so] I know Frank [Beamer's] gonna be pulling really hard against us on Saturday night," Brown jokingly stated. "[Can't imagine] how proud Frank must be of what Shane's accomplished."

Beyond the prototypical coach speak about players like Rattler and Juice Wells, not much else was mentioned about South Carolina, except for the area where the Gamecocks thrive the most: Special Teams. Mack Brown has been coaching football since the early 1970s and, thus, has learned a lot throughout his career, including how a tremendous special teams unit can affect the game.

"They've done a really good job, especially with trick plays on their special teams. Coach [Pete] Lembo does as good a job as anybody in the country. What it does [is] it keeps you from being as aggressive as you want [to be] because you got them all over the place," Mack explained. "They've done a really good job of making sure they keep you off balance."
