BREAKING: South Carolina's BOT Approve Contract For New RB Coach Marquel Blackwell
A week ago today, reports surfaced that Shane Beamer had narrowed his search for a new running backs coach down to one name: Marquel Blackwell. Since those initial reports, no public information has been brought to light regarding the process being finalized, until Friday afternoon, when the University of South Carolina's Board of Trustees approved a two-year contract for the former Texas A&M assistant. Blackwell is expected to make $400,000 in year one and $575,000 in year two, per Alan Cole of Gamecockscoop.
Marquel is 18-year coaching vet. who's spent four years at the Power 4 level. A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Blackwell has overseen three 1,000-yard single-season rushers in his career, including former Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins who, as a true freshman in 2022, led the SEC with 1,565 yards. Marquel is the second assistant coaching hire made by Shane Beamer this offseason, joining newly-minted wide receivers coach James Coley, whose contract was approved this past Friday.
