Beamer Discusses Remaining Priorities In Transfer Portal Cycle

South Carolina's Football program will continue to look for players in the portal who can help them at critical positions on both sides of the football.

On Wednesday afternoon, South Carolina head football coach Shane Beamer talked to the media about various topics: the 2024 high school class they had just signed, some of the transfers they've secured over the past couple of weeks, and what's next for the program. For Beamer and his staff, the transfer portal cycle doesn't end until January 3rd, meaning any underclassmen could enter the portal over the next two weeks, some the Gamecocks just have to inquire about, and potentially others at positions where depth is still needed.

"Yeah I think you're always looking at can you better your team at every single position - I don't think you never say never to anything," Beamer said. "If there was something on this [player where] you just said, 'You know what? This is a guy that we can't turn him down,' We would look to that. But certainly receiver, we need more depth there. We want to rotate multiple guys a game. The guys in our program to continue to come along, and that's a position that we wouldn't turn away a great one that was out there right now."

One player who could alleviate the number issue at receiver is Luke Doty, who, despite being listed as a quarterback, played primarily out wide in 2023.

However, making an official position change for Doty would take away from another important room on offense.

"If you say that Luke's focusing on receiver, in a lot of ways, you go into spring practice with two scholarship quarterbacks: LaNorris [Sellers] and Dante [Reno]. We need to get some depth in that room, and some competition in that room, and LaNorris knows that, and Dante knows that without a doubt."

Despite Shane's statements, some will still say that the offensive line unit should top the priority list. While Beamer thinks that group, along with the defensive secondary, is good, he would like to be proactive so that their depth isn't tested like it was in 2023.

"Offensive line [wise], we're in a really good position, but as we saw this year, you can never have enough there as well. And then in the secondary, [we] lose Marcellas Dial, and we got some good core group of guys returning, but just from a depth standpoint, would like to get a more, you know, some more bodies in that room because that's where a lot of your special teams players come from."
