Gamecocks Still Viewed As Slight Underdog Against North Carolina
When gauging what the national college football space thinks about their team, South Carolina fans typically find themselves at odds with pundits, mainly because of the longstanding belief that the Gamecocks have always been viewed in a smaller light compared to other programs. That same thought process carries over to oddsmakers, who, due to South Carolina's football history, seem more hesitant than others to get behind the Gamecocks.
That remains true regarding the consensus odds set for the Gamecocks' week one matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels. When lines started to come out in early May, North Carolina was listed as a slight 1.5-point favorite, a line that has since grown to 2.5 points as of August 27th. The over/under point total has also undergone some noticeable changes, with the over/under being listed at 64.5 points after starting at 70.5 points in early May and dropping down to as low as 61.5 points over the last six and a half weeks.
A lot of people expect this game either way to be a close ball game that could witness a lot of points being put on the board due to the two star quarterbacks participating in Spencer Rattler and Drake Maye. No one can deny that this is one of the most highly-anticipated matchups in week one of the 2023 college football season, and the numbers from oddsmakers reflect that sentiment.
