Gamecock Offense Comes Out Swinging, Sputters In 2nd Half
This is a game that may have Carolina fans more upset than content. The Gamecocks did everything they needed to do to have a chance at the upset in the first half. However, it took a turn for the worse in the second half. It seemed like they played not to lose after halftime, and that's not a way to pull off the unthinkable. Here are some tendencies we noticed on the offensive side of the ball.
Defensive Stunts
Georgia continued to give this Gamecocks offensive line problems with these. In the first half, they managed it well with chip blocks, and Spencer Rattler moved in the pocket to get it to his guys. In the second half, Georgia added a wrinkle to it, delaying their stunts, which gave Carolina some problems and forced Rattler to abandon the pocket laterally more frequently, which played more to the advantage of the Bulldogs.
Lack Of Run Game For Spencer Rattler
We knew coming into the ball game that the Gamecocks would need to establish some kind of a running game to force Georgia to respect the run and not pin their ears back and get after Spencer Rattler. The thing is it seemed like Dowell Loggains didn't even try, only handing it off to a running back seven times. That allowed Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs' defensive coaching staff to scheme up more blitz packages and slowed the Gamecocks' offense to a crawl.
Costly Drops
The Gamecocks have done a great job this year at making plays when given the chance. This afternoon, however, that was not the case. The weather could have affected a lot of that, as it really came down in a couple of different stretches in this game. The reason this facet of the game was a killer is the fact that the drops came in moments where the Gamecocks needed a play, and this was especially the case in the second half.
