Xavier Legette Continuing Torrid Pace, Has Chance To Enter Elite Company
Xavier Legette has had an incredible breakout campaign for the South Carolina Gamecocks this season, and he continued that last Saturday against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, finishing the game with nine receptions, 217 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. His receiving yardage total was the second-highest single-game mark in school history, finishing just 16 yards shy of Pharoh Cooper's record of 233 receiving yards that he set back in 2014 against Tennessee.
Legette's stat line from Saturday's game gives him 50 catches for 973 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns on the year. His 973 receiving yards for the season ties him for the sixth-highest mark in program history, again alongside Pharoh Cooper. To add to this fantastic season Legette has had for this team, there are still a couple of different ways he can write his name in the Gamecock history books.
Xavier Legette is only 27 receiving yards away from breaking the 1,000-yard single-season mark. Doing so would make him only the fifth Gamecock ever to record over 1,000 in a single season. He would join the likes of Alshon Jeffery, Sidney Rice (2 times), Pharoh Cooper, and Sterling Sharpe.
He's also only 15 receptions away from breaking into the top 10 on the single-season receptions list, with Bryan Edwards being slotted at No. 10 with 64 receptions. He's also gone for over 100 receiving yards in a game five times this season, tied for third on the all-time list in that respective category.
Xavier Legette has been an instrumental part of this South Carolina football team in 2023 and has earned every bit of praise, along with the increased value of his draft stock. Not only is he a tremendous athlete, but he's also a tremendous human and teammate. If anyone deserves to be in the history books here at South Carolina, Legette's name is right at the top.
