Gamecock Punter Commit Mason Love Makes History
Let's set the scene. You're down late in the 4th quarter and driving to win the game. It's late; you're tired and have one last attempt to win the game with a 50-yard field goal attempt. Such a kick is a challenging attempt for some of the best kickers in the pros, let alone a high school kicker. The calm, the confidence, and the precision needed for something as big as a walk-off, game-winning field goal is not easy to have or come by.
Enter Mason Love, who was called on to do precisely that. Love is the #2 kicker in the country, per 247 sports rankings, and a 2024 Gamecock commit and backed up his notoriety in one play. With all the pressure, anxiety, and weight of the world on his shoulders for those last seconds, Mason nailed a 50-yard field goal. Not only was it good, but he could have hit it from 55, maybe even 60.
Having a specialist who can "clutch" a game in big-time moments is needed at every level of football, and it's precisely what the Gamecocks have in Mason Love. However, it didn't just end with a regular 50-yard winning field goal; he made history for his team. Per Park Hill South's Twitter, Loves's winner surpassed a record that had been in place for over two decades! The Gamecocks have had some talented punters over the past couple of years, current punter Kai Kroeger and former Carolina Panthers punter Joseph Charlton, and they hope Mason Love will add his name to that impressive list.
