Report: South Carolina In Lead Pack For Kelvin Hunter
Head coach Shane Beamer and South Carolina's football coaching staff have been on a tear in recent weeks in terms of landing the best high school football prospects the Palmetto State has to offer, a trend that made the Gamecocks a player on the national stage under Steve Spurrier.
Whether or not this recent recruiting success automatically helps South Carolina turn the corner remains to be seen. Still, there's no question that it causes everyone within the borders to consider the state's flagship university to an even greater extent. That could be the case with West Florence standout Kelvin Hunter.
Hunter is a prospect who's already visited the Gamecocks on numerous occasions, including his most recent visit for South Carolina's Junior day held in late January. In the past few days, Kelvin talked to Phil Kornblut of the SportsTalk Media Network about the latest on his recruitment and conceded that his most recent trip to Columbia went quite well and that the Gamecocks are in his top three.
"It does a lot, you know," Hunter told Kornblut. "They have a big spot in my recruiting right now with that visit. My top three right now would have to be South Carolina, Michigan, and Virginia Tech."
Kelvin is an explosive athlete who played primarily as an in-the-box safety for the 4A West Florence Knights this past fall and combined with how his recruitment has played out to this point, Torrian Gray and the Gamecocks defensive coaching staff may soon be adding another diamond in the rough in the defensive secondary.
