Where Will 2024 Five-Star Forward Joyce Edwards Commit?
It didn't happen overnight, but Dawn Staley slowly but surely turned South Carolina's Women's Basketball program into a national power, and arguably the standard of the sport with what they've done over the last four years and could accomplish this season. One of the reasons for this turnaround has been the staff's collective ability to recruit and fill their roster up with McDonald's All-American's at every single position.
The prospect that changed the program was No. 1 recruit A'ja Wilson from the 2014 class, who has gone on to build a legendary career for herself in the WNBA. Staley also landed five-star guard and Columbia native MiLaysia Fulwiley in the 2023 cycle, with the freshman already looking like a potential generational talent for the Gamecocks.
South Carolina could soon be adding another homegrown talent to their program, as five-star forward Joyce Edwards, the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2024 class according to ESPN's HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings, will be announcing her college decision later tonight at her high school's gymnasium.
Edwards has long been a target for Staley and the Gamecocks, who dispensed an offer to the Camden High School product back on July 13th, 2019. The competition has remained stiff in this recruitment, but it appears that South Carolina, LSU, and Clemson are the three finalists for Joyce, who's greatly valuing academics, along with potential proximity to home and the chance to compete on the national stage in women's college basketball.
I would say this will come down to the Gamecocks and the Tigers of Baton Rouge, and believe that the prospects of playing for Dawn Staley and staying close to home will just be too much for Kim Mulkey's program to overcome at the end of the day.
Final Prediction: South Carolina
