Star Freshman Andrej Stojakovic Leads Stanford To Massive Win Despite Being Short-Handed
On Friday, the Stanford Cardinal (2-1) welcomed Eastern Washington (0-3) to Palo Alto as they looked to bounce back from their head-scratching loss to Santa Clara.
Stanford secured a huge 95-70 win, pushing them to 3-1 on the year.
This game started off how the Santa Clara loss ended, which was Stanford cold on offense and not able to stop anything on defense. The Eagles even were able to build a double-digit lead in the first half, but the Cardinal offense got a huge three from Benny Gealer and Jared Bynum and next thing we knew, Stanford was up 27-26 after trailing 26-14.
However, while the Cardinal were without star forwards Spencer Jones and Brandon Angel, it was freshman forward Andrej Stojakovic who was the catalyst for this team. He finished the game with his career-high 18 points, which he also scored against Santa Clara, and has scored in double digits the last three games. While being known for his shooting, he had a monster dunk early in the second half that really got the team going as they went up by double digits and never looked back.
As a team, Stanford went 12-of-25 from three (48%) while going 34-of-62 from the field (54.8%). Their French big man Maxime Raynaud finished with 14 points, Michael Jones had 15, and Gealer had 13 off the bench.
They will now head to the Bahamas for their biggest test of this young season, as in the first Battle 4 Atlantis game, they will be taking on No. 14 Arkansas.
