Stanford was once known for partying in the backfield on defense, but as the program began to struggle, they lost their edge across the defensive line.

The highest-ranked defender of their class Benedict Umeh has a prime opportunity to change that for the Cardinal as the No. 135 player in the country according to 247Sports' composite rankings officially signed with Stanford on Wednesday.

Umeh's story is a bit different than anyone in the country's, as he missed his entire senior season due to having Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer. The Canadian product, who transferred to Avon Old Farms (CT) ahead of his junior season, celebrated his final day of chemotherapy back in October.

Umeh is someone who even as a freshman should crack Stanford's defensive line rotation and provide someone who can help prevent teams from running the ball, and also get to the opposing quarterback.
