Stanford and Cal have momentum in their favor to join the ACC
The realignment saga in college football is not yet done and according to one Pac-12 insider we could see another move very soon.
After being heavily linked to the ACC, Stanford and Cal saw their hopes to join the conference fizzle. There were efforts made by Notre Dame that didn't seem to help, and most recently notable names like Condoleezza Rice and George W. Bush got involved in campaigning for their respective programs with Bush making a push for SMU. After reports indicated that Stanford felt they could get the votes by the end of the week, things went silent.
That was until Pac-12 insider Jon Wilner reported that something could be going down in the next 24 hours.
“My hunch is the next 24 hours will provide clarity on the ACC front — and that momentum is currently trending in favor of the Bears and Cardinal,” Wilner wrote on the app formerly known as Twitter. “But we shall see.”
As of last week, Stanford and Cal came up one vote short of being granted membership in the ACC with programs such as Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina and North Carolina State being opposed.
Based on Wilner's report, it appears that something has happened behind closed doors that has led to someone changing their mind. If Stanford and Cal are unable to get the votes, they may end up absorbing programs from the Mountain West or the American in what would be a new look Pac-12.
