In this story:

After being two votes short of being able to join the ACC on Wednesday, Sports Illustrated's Patt Ford and Richard Johnson reported on Friday that Stanford and Cal are now one vote short.

They need 12 of the 15 members to give them a yes, but even with efforts being made by Notre Dame to welcome them to the conference they appear to be coming up short. The SI report explained that on Wednesday it was Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina and North Carolina State that didn't back their candidacy, and due to not having the numbers it may not even be brought to an official vote.

If they end up not getting into the ACC, the options for Stanford and Cal will end up being a hope that the Big Ten adds them, join either the Mountain West or American, or for Standard they can go independent

However, if Stanford does go that route it will be difficult to find a conference for their non-football sports.

The college football season continues to be overshadowed by decisions made in the boardroom.
