Stanford Running Back E.J. Smith To Enter Name Into Transfer Portal
Once the regular season ends it is no longer the holiday season anymore, it is transfer portal season.
Graduate transfers are the first to go as they have the freedom to transfer right away, while the rest of the players who plan to move on have to wait until the portal officially opens on December 4. Stanford is no stranger to losing players to the transfer portal as they lost pretty much their entire starting lineup from 2022 to the portal, and they already saw their first entrant on Tuesday.
Senior running back E.J. Smith took to social media to announce that he will be transferring, marking the end of his time in Palo Alto.
Unfortunately for Smith, his time on the farm will see him remembered for having a ton of potential but being plagued by constant injuries. He played in just 24 career games in four years, with this season being his healthiest year in terms of availability after playing in just two games a year ago. It also so happened to come when the Cardinal had no ability to run the ball thanks to a young and inexperienced offensive line.
Smith will depart Stanford with 555 career rushing yards, and five touchdowns on 5.1 yards per carry. He also added 59 catches for 242 yards and a score.
As a recruit, Smith, who hails from Dallas, ranked as a four-star and chose Stanford over Georgia, Texas A&M, and his dad's alma mater Florida. He should have a fairly interesting market, and if he can stay healthy could end up being one of the more effective backs in the country.
