Christian McCaffrey's Two Touchdowns Make More History Amid 49ers' Deep Playoff Run
The San Francisco 49ers officially advanced to the NFC Championship on Saturday thanks to their huge win over the Green Bay Packers.
The story of the game may have been the quarterback play and how Brock Purdy drove them down the field to set up the game-winning score, but it was running back Christian McCaffrey who powered in two scores that aren't being talked about enough. His first touchdown came in the third quarter as the Packers had a lead, and at that point looked like they were controlling the game. McCaffrey took a toss 39 yards practically untouched and gave San Francisco a lead.
The Packers eventually regained the lead, and after a San Francisco field goal it was evident that this game was coming down to the wire. After a missed field goal by Green Bay, the 49ers had the ball down four with a little over five minutes remaining. Purdy and company drove down the field, setting up a six-yard score from McCaffrey. The score went on to become the game-winner for San Francisco, and for McCaffrey helped him make history.
The NFL rushing title winner has been on a terror this season, and his two scores on Saturday marked touchdowns No. 22 and 23 on the year for him (counting playoffs). According to CBS Sports, 23 touchdowns have officially tied him with NFL Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice for the most scrimmage touchdowns in a San Francisco 49ers season including the playoffs, in franchise history.
Next Sunday he will have a chance to hit 24, which would give him sole possession of the record. He and the 49ers are in sit-and-wait mode on Sunday, as they are awaiting the winner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions in order to know who they are playing.
They met with Tampa Bay earlier in the year, beating them by a score of 27-14.
