Three Aggies Selected On Day 3 Of MLB Draft

Jack Moss, Brandyn Garcia and Will Johnston are the next three players to potentially head to the MLB in 2023.

While Texas A&M baseball didn't feature a player drafted on Sunday's first two rounds of the MLB Draft, three prospects heard their names called on Day 2.

Three more now will have the option to go pro after being selected during rounds 11-20 on Tuesday afternoon.

First baseman Jack Moss, left-handed relief pitcher Brandyn Garcia and setup man Will Johnston all were selected on Day 3 of the draft. Moss and Garcia were drafted in the 11th round to the Cincinnati Reds (318th overall) and Seattle Mariners (337th overall), respectively, while Johnston heard his name called in the 13th round (376th overall) to the Oakland Athletics.

The trio of Aggies join shortstop Hunter Haas, right-handed starter Nathan Dettmer and third baseman Trevor Werner as players selected in this year's class. Hass, a one-year transfer from Arizona State, was selected first with the 120th pick in the fourth round by the Tampa Bay Rays. Dettmer was taken by the A's with the 139th pick in the fifth round, while Werner was selected No. 199 overall by the Kansas City Royals in the seventh round.

Nicknamed "professional hitter," Moss could eventually live up to the hype should he make it to the big leagues from the Reds' farm system. A consistent bat at the plate, Moss hit .361 during his two seasons in Aggieland after beginning his career at Arizona State.

Moss was arguably A&M's most efficient hitter during its run to the College World Series in 2022, leading the team in batting average (.380) and hits (103) to go along with a .520 slugging percentage, six home runs, 49 RBIs and 28 walks. Last season, he led the Aggies again in batting average (.355) and hits (93) while posting a .466 slugging percentage, four home runs and 38 RBIs.

Moss' most prominent moment in an Aggies uniform came in the Lone Star Showdown matchup against Texas in 2022 when he hit for the cycle in a 12-9 road victory. He also received SEC All-Tournament and All-Regional recognition for his efforts in the Aggies' postseason run this past spring.

A transfer from Quinnipiac University, Garicia spent one season in College Station before garnering interest from professional clubs. Last season, the southpaw appeared in 27 games, posting a 3-3 record with a 5.56 ERA in 43.2 innings pitched. Garcia also recorded 56 strikeouts against 23 walks.

For his collegiate career, Garcia posted an 8-16 record with a 5.93 ERA across 148.2 innings in 51 appearances.

Johnston, a four-year reliever for the Aggies, took control in the setup role once Jim Schlossnagle was named head coach. In 2022, he posted a 3-1 record with a 3.25 ERA, four saves, and a 49-18 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 36 innings pitched. Last season, Johnston finished with a 3-3 record, a 5.89 ERA, four saves and a 70-31 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

All three players still have one year of eligibility remaining and could return for another season to help the Aggies return to the College World Series for the second time since Schlossnagle was hired from TCU. Haas, Dettmer and Werner are all expected to sign with their respective ball clubs, according to the Bryan-College Station Eagle, thus ending their time in Aggieland.
