Aggies in the MLB: 2 Texas A&M Infielders, 1 Pitcher to Debut at Draft Combine

Nathan Dettmer, Hunter Haas and Jack Moss will all represent the Maroon & White at the professional level, looking to make their way to the MLB starting Tuesday.
In this story:

After an early exit from the NCAA baseball tournament, the Texas A&M Aggies will look to reload ahead of next season.

Behind veteran coach Jim Schlossnagle, the Aggies have proven their ability to compete with some of the nation's top programs, but after losing in the Stanford Regional Final, it's been made clear that change is in order.

The catch? Texas A&M may have to do without Nathan Dettmer, Jack Moss and Hunter Haas

The MLB Draft Combine is being held at Chase Field in Phoenix from Tuesday into Wednesday, giving all college and semi-professional prospects a chance to display their skills for scouts and executives.

Last season, Moss and Haas led the Aggies in batting average, runs scored and total hits, making up a large part of Texas A&M's offense that overpowered Stanford in the two teams' first matchup, as well as Cal State Fullerton.

One of Aggies' biggest struggles last season was pitching consistency. Dettmer entered the season off of his best season with the Aggies, but declined on the mound, especially during the latter part of the season. He managed to strike out 65 batters, but amassed a 6.32 ERA while pitching for the most innings on the roster.

Either way, Dettmer proved his ability to be an elite-level pitcher, and will look to find his groove once more during his professional tryout.

As the Aggies look to retool their lineup and dugout, they may have to do without three of their top players — all of which have one more year of eligibility remaining.

The good news for Texas A&M is that unlike NFL and NBA prospects, entering the draft combine does not eliminate players' eligibility, especially if no pro contract is offered, meaning that there is a chance they could return for one more season.

Aggie fans will just have to wait and see.

Until then, they can tune into MLB Network to watch Haas, Moss and Dettmer at the combine Tuesday and Wednesday.
