Texas A&M baseball has a new 12th Man for the 2024 season

Senior infielder Ryan Targac will don the No. 12 around the diamond for the impending year, third-year coach Jim Schosslnagle announced Tuesday.

“Ryan was a near unanimous selection by his teammates, coaches and support staff to deserve the honor of wearing No. 12 for the Aggies this spring,” Schlossnagle said in a statement. “No. 12 represents many of the great core values of Texas A&M but most specifically selfless service and being available at all times to help your teammates."

Since arriving from TCU in 2022, Schlossnagle has implemented a similar feel to that of the football team, where a senior wears the number as a badge of honor. For baseball, it's the captain paying homage to the 12th Man mantra.

Last season, second baseman Austin Bost wore No. 12 and produced a solid season. The year prior, catcher Troy Claunch wore the number after joining the program from Oregon State.

Targac, who's entering his final year of eligibility, lived up to the 12th Man name last season after playing five different positions, including second base, first base, and left field. He started 64 games and posted a .224/.370/.429 slash line with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs.

“Ryan is an outstanding player but an even better teammate that is truly invested in others, is committed to excellence in all areas of his life and truly keeps the best interests of the team ahead of his own," said Schlossnagle.

Aggies Baseball To Open Regular Season At Home

A native of Halletsville, Targac has recorded 138 starts over three seasons with the Aggies. Entering his final season at Blue Bell Park, he boasts a career .251 batting average with 27 home runs, 109 RBIs, and 23 stolen bases.

The No. 7 Aggies open the regular season at Olsen Field on Friday, Feb. 16, with a three-game home series against McNeese State.
