Aggies Add Stanford Baseball Standout Braden Montgomery For 2024 Season
Texas A&M Aggies baseball saw its season come to an end in Palo Alto at the Stanford Regional against the Cardinal. Now, one of their top players is headed to College Station to end his playing career.
The Aggies picked up the commitment of two-way star Braden Montgomery, who confirmed via Instagram that he would be playing for the SEC program in 2024. The move marks arguably the most significant acquisition for A&M since the hiring of Jim Schlossnagle in the summer of 2021.
A native of Madison (Miss.), Montgomery entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last month after spending two seasons with the Cardinal. He chose A&M over Mississippi State, Ole Miss, LSU, and several other major programs.
Last season, Montgomery slashed .336/.461/.661 with 17 home runs and 61 RBI. On the mound, the right-hander tossed 14 innings in 10 appearances, finishing with a 1-2 record with a 12.21 ERA. He recorded 19 strikeouts against 11 walks and allowed four home runs.
Per the Cardinal team website, Montgomery is best known for his fastball, which can reach up to ranges of 90 mph. As a freshman, the 6-2, 220-pound product posted a 1-2 record with 28 strikeouts against 11 walks.
Montgomery was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2022 after slashing .294/.361/.596 with 18 home runs and 57 RBI. In the Stanford Regional, Montgomery when 6-of-13 with a home run and four RBI in the three-game series.
The addition of Montgomery strengthens A&M's outfield and gives the SEC West program a 1-2 combination of youthful upside with power. Last season, freshman phenom Jace LaViolette proved to be one of the top young hitters in the game with a .287/.414/.632 slash line and freshman record-setting 21 homers.
A&M must replace the production of Jordan Thompson and Brett Minnich, who finished their careers at Blue Bell Park last season.
The Aggies have now added 10 total transfers this offseason, most notably Arizona State right-hander pitcher Brock Peery, San Diego State right-handed pitcher Eldridge Armstrong, Pennsylvania catcher Jackson Appel, Columbia outfielder Hayden Schott and Michigan second baseman Ted Burton.
