Dan Campbell Wants to Help Texas A&M Aggies, Just Not Coach Them
The Texas A&M Aggies fired head coach Jimbo Fisher over the weekend, following a disappointing six-year campaign in College Station.
Now, the Aggies are in the midst of a nationwide coaching search - one that reportedly led them to former Aggie tight end and current Detroit Lions head coach, Dan Campbell.
And while Campbell hasn't confirmed that he has spoken with the Aggies, he did offer up his help in the search.
“Maybe,” Campbell said during a press conference. “But that’s all good. Certainly, I know some people there and I love my school. That’s my alma mater and I want to do anything I can to help them but coach for them.”
Per CBS Sports, Texas A&M had initiated "backchannel communications" with Campbell, reaching out about the Aggies job. Per the report, Campbell made it very clear he would be staying in Detroit.
Campbell was a logical target given his history with the Aggies and his current success with the Detroit Lions.
Campbell played tight end in College Station from 1995 through 1998 before being drafted in the third round, No. 78 overall, by the New York Giants in the 1999 NFL Draft.
In 48 games played in that span, Campbell caught 27 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns as mostly a reserve player. The Clifton, Texas native then played 10 seasons in the NFL, split between the Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and Detroit Lions.
The Aggies also reportedly interviewed UTSA coach Jeff Traylor for the position on Thursday.
