'So Amazing!' Mike Elko Recounts Aggies Transfer Portal Success
The Texas A&M Aggies might have had more turnover than any other program in college football this offseason, with 46 total players coming and going via the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Two of those players - Chase Bisontis and Tyreek Chappell have since returned to the team, while 23 new players are heading to Aggieland to play under new head coach Mike Elko.
And during his appearance on TexAgs Radio earlier this week, Elko recounted the chaos over the last couple of months, and how the Aggies were able to be so successful.
“Everybody that we bring here, their jaw hits the floor because it’s so amazing," Elko said. “We’re all in the same spot. You see what it should be. Now, how do we get it there?”
Fortunately for the Aggies, they easily got it there, with multiple Power 5, impact transfers committing and signing to the program, including edge rusher Nic Scourton, defensive backs Dezz Ricks and Jaydon Hill, and linebacker Scooby Williams, among others.
Due to the mass exodus from the program following the firing of Jimbo Fisher which saw the losses of stars like Evan Stewart, Walter Nolen, and LT Overton, that was the only possible path for Texas A&M.
“There was not a lot of margin for error. That week, we had to hit at a really high rate to get where we wanted to go," Elko said. “We were able to have an awful lot of success given what we were able to put together with the restrictions in place.”
What's even more exciting for the Aggies? They might not be done just yet.
Aggies' Commit Terry Bussey Could Be A Three-Way Player Says Mike Elko
There is still another window in which players can enter the portal and find a new home later this spring after spring football camp.
And should any more impact players enter the portal that Elko believes can help the program, he will be ready to pounce.
“You’re going to continue to look for pieces that make this roster better," Elko said. "Maybe there will be, or maybe there won’t be in the spring portal window.”
