Aggies DB Bryce Anderson Details Being QB of Defense
The Texas A&M Aggies defense seems set to benefit from having a quarterback in its secondary this season.
No, Connor Weigman isn't suddenly being tasked with guarding SEC receivers while also maintaining QB1 duties, but former high school quarterback and current Aggies defensive back Bryce Anderson is proving what's possible in the realm of versatility.
After a freshman season that saw him make some big plays despite being in a deep secondary with NFL talent, Anderson is ready to take on a starting role in DJ Durkin's defense just a few years removed from being a high school quarterback.
He admitted the change has had its ups and downs, but Anderson is oozing with confidence ahead of what could be a breakout year.
"It was a big change coming from an offensive mentality to a defensive mentality," he said. "But having that leadership, it's been the same like having that quarterback leadership, taking it over to the defensive side. I try to keep that mindset."
For Anderson, making a transition to defense in the SEC is far from simple, especially after posting over 1,600 total yards and 14 touchdowns at quarterback as a senior in high school while also being named District 21-6A First Team QB of the Year in 2020.
But he made the change look easy, posting 28 total tackles, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries as a freshman.
This just goes to show how talented he is entering his second year in College Station, as he and the Aggies look for a major bounce-back campaign. A&M kicks off its season on Saturday, Sept. 2 at home against New Mexico.
