'I Was Shocked': Texas A&M Aggies QB Jaylen Henderson Gives Thoughts On Jimbo Fisher Firing
Jaylen Henderson dazzled a crowd of 103,000 Texas A&M Aggies at Kyle Field on Saturday night. The redshirt sophomore gave the fanbase hope that their season wasn't over but only just beginning a new chapter.
And he made his coach Jimbo Fisher proud, tossing two touchdowns and rushing for two more en route to a 51-10 win over Mississippi State. He embraced the sixth-year coach as he walked off the sidelines and into the locker room.
Little did he know, that would be the first and final start in the Fisher era. Behind closed doors, a decision had been made on the head coach's future in College Station.
Fisher was fired Sunday morning around 9 a.m. at Kyle Field. Before athletic director Ross Bjork could address the players, news had spread through social media.
“We just won by 41 and the next day you find out your head coach is fired,” Henderson said in. an interview with On3. "That was wild. It caught all of us by surprise."
Bjork said Sunday the win didn't factor into the decision to fire Fisher, who finished his time with a 45-25 record with the Aggies. Conversations of the removal reached full steam following a 38-35 loss on the road against No. 10 Ole Miss.
Fisher, who will be owed over $76 million through 2031, said following the win that A&M was "three or four plays away from a playoff spot." He's not wrong, either. The Aggies (6-4, 4-3 SEC) lost three games in conference play by a combined 13 points.
A special teams stop against Tennessee and perhaps A&M sits with seven wins heading its home finale against Abilene Christian? A red zone stop against Rebels running back Quinshon Judkins, and the Aggies remain in the hunt for a New Year's Six Bowl bid.
And a fourth-down call instead of a punt? Do the Aggies defeat Nick Saban and Alabama at home for a second time in three seasons?
For now, Henderson is preparing for the Aggies' final home game. Interim coach Elijah Robinson said Bobby Petrino would work with both quarterbacks throughout the week before determining who starts between him and Max Johnson.
Even if Henderson isn't the starter for A&M's final three games, he's appreciative of Fisher giving him an opportunity to play in the SEC.
"He was a big reason why I’m even at Texas A&M, so I appreciate him for even allowing me to come to a school like this," said Henderson. "I wish him nothing but the best in the rest of his life.”
Kickoff against the Wildcats is scheduled for 11 a.m.
