Watch: Rueben Owens Scores First Aggie Touchdown
COLLEGE STATION -- Welcome to Kyle Field's end zone, Rueben Owens.
Texas A&M's freshman phenom punched his first touchdown on a 21-yard run with 5:34 remaining in the third quarter to extend the lead by 34. The Aggies have scored on back-to-back drives to begin the second half.
Owens, a five-star tailback from El Campo, has rotated in with Amari Daniels and Le'Veon Moss for starting reps throughout the year. Daniels scored on an 8-yard run just before halftime to give the Aggies (1-1) a 27-3 lead. Moss totaled three carries in the first half for 14 yards.
The Aggies entered the season needing a feature back following De'Von Achane's departure to the NFL. So far, sixth-year coach Jimbo Fisher has been fair with his carries, allowing the trio to split time working with the starters led by quarterback Conner Weigman.
But Owens, who totaled over 2,000 rushing yards his senior season, presents the most upside. Initially committed to Louisville before Early Signing Period's cutoff, Owens' elusiveness, sure-fire hands and ability to win in the open field have carved out a role for him to see extensive reps.
Weigman was benched following the touchdown run. The sophomore finished 25-of-29 passing for 337 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a 19-yard score in the second quarter to extend A&M's lead by 14.
Through three quarters, Owens leads A&M in carries (8), rushing yards (51) and yards per run (6.4). The Aggies return to Kyle Field next Saturday to face Auburn in their SEC opener.
Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
