Aggies DL Shemar Turner Arrested For Reckless Driving
Texas A&M Aggies starting defensive lineman Shemar Turner was arrested Monday on a charge of reckless driving after averaging 85 miles per hour in marked zones of 35 to 45 miles per hour.
The incident occurred on Aug. 12, but according to the report, the officer who witnessed Turner’s reckless driving was “unable to safely overtake the vehicle” due to the high speed. The report also mentioned that Turner ran through a red light and "disregarded official traffic control devices."
Per the official report from A&M police, Turner was first spotted on Aug. 12 along F&B Road near Agronomy Road and an unsafe lane change forced the vehicle behind Turner to "brake to avoid collision." Turner also ran a red light, failing to yield for oncoming traffic before “accelerating to a very high rate of speed."
Police later tracked Turner's car to an A&M parking lot next to Kyle Field. According to Turner, he did not know the speed limit on the road he was driving on and was unaware of his speed. Police said Turner told them he was running late to a meeting, hence the vehicle's speed.
A former five-star defensive lineman from DeSoto, Turner started 11 games last season for A&M, recording 32 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. He was one of two players to register a sack in A&M's Week 2 loss against Miami.
According to the Brazos County records, Turner was required to post a bond of $3,000 and has since been released. His status for Saturday's game against Louisiana-Monroe remains in question.
Turner's arrest marks the second arrest for an A&M player this season. On Sept. 1, freshman receiver Micah Tease was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance and a separate charge of less than two ounces of marijuana.
Tease, a former four-star recruit from Oklahoma was suspended by A&M athletics following his arrest for the season opener against New Mexico. However, he did suit up for the Aggies’ 48-33 loss to the Hurricanes.
Sixth-year coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday that Tease did not play due to being limited in practice last week.
"We’ll build him back in," Fisher said of Tease's role with the program moving forward.
The Aggies kickoff against the Warhawks at Kyle Field Saturday at 3 p.m. The game will be televised on SEC Network.
