Jimbo vs. Bobby? ESPN's Greg McElroy Speaks on Fisher vs. Petrino Play Calling
Texas A&M Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher didn't exactly inspire confidence with his answers to questions from the media about calling plays on offense between himself and new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino earlier this week.
To some, Fisher's body language said one thing, while his words said another.
To others, it was just Jimbo being Jimbo.
However, in a recent podcast appearance on Always College Football, ESPN analyst Greg McElroy believes Fisher, when it is all said and done, will let Petrino be in control of the offense.
"How much will Jimbo Fisher meddle in what Bobby Petrino wants to do offensively,” McElroy said. “I don’t think he’s going to meddle that much to be honest with you. I think you go out, you hire a guy like Bobby Petrino, you’re not going to tell him what he can and cannot do.
In fact, McElroy went a step further, saying that he believes Fisher will relegate himself to the point where he is simply giving his advice from time to time.
Which, in turn, according to McElroy, will free Petrino up to do what he does best - call offense.
"You might give some advice. I see this, I see that. I want to try this, sure, you might make some suggestions. But are you ultimately going to call a guy in that has that many skins on the wall to call plays and then not let him do his job? I have a hard time envisioning that.”
Whatever the case, Petrino's offensive accolades speak for themselves.
And if Fisher is indeed stepping to the side, it is likely what is best for the Texas A&M offense as a whole.
