'Coach is the Boss!' Aggies OC Bobby Petrino Silences Talks of Him, Fisher 'Not Getting Along'

Texas A&M's hiring of former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino created waves on social media stemming from the offensive coordinator's expected fit in College Station, but after just one media appearance, that narrative seems to have done a full 180, and for the better.

When the Texas A&M Aggies brought on an offensive coordinator known to a large portion of the college football world as the "motorcycle coach," one could imagine the mess that it would make in College Station.

Fans and analysts alike made clear their reservations regarding Bobby Petrino's hire in the days following the official announcement, with complaints ranging from the veteran coach's fit with the Aggies to whether or not he and Jimbo Fisher would even get along — Petrino was a multi-year head coach himself, after all.

But just as quickly as they surfaced, doubts about Petrino and the Aggies seemingly vanished after his media day press conference, which allowed reporters to address the very questions that had them doubting him in the first place, meaning it's safe to say that Petrino held his own on the podium.

In fact, Petrino's media appearance couldn't have gone any better.

The 62-year-old coordinator got things started off with a positive appraisal of Fisher and his past success at Florida State, which he says he used as reference for tougher opponents during his coaching tenure.

"When we were getting ready for a game, the first thing we wanted to put on was 'Let's see what Florida State did against them,'" Petrino said. "My knowledge of his success and what his [offenses] liked to do. That made [Texas A&M] very attractive."

Petrino went on to state how returning to the SEC was always a big goal of his, and when the time came to address his relationship with Fisher on the sidelines, Petrino could have laughed and it would've gotten the same point across.

"I've had people send me things about 'Are you and coach Fisher getting along?'" Petrino said. "[But] that's not really how it works. Coach is the boss. My job is to try and keep him happy and make sure that everything works the way he wants it to work."

Added Petrino: "I understand that more than probably anybody because of the number of years I've been the head coach."

Petrino's comments are certainly promising for the Aggies, especially given the coordinator's expressive history and riddled history. Petrino knows his role and there is already a mutual respect between him and Fisher, paving the way for a successful season behind the scenes.

The next question is whether or not that working relationship can translate to wins on the field, though rest assured, both Fisher and Petrino will be doing everything they can to make that happen.
