Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher Cracks Top-25 FBS Coaches List

In Texas A&M Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher's first five seasons in College Station, he is 39-21.
In this story:

A 5-7 record in 2022 — his worst in his 13-year head coaching career — certainly won't help Texas A&M Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher's standing as one of college football's best coaches in the country.

Ahead of last season, CBS Sports' team of analysts had him rounding out the top five in their Football Bowl Subdivision head coaching rankings, but after last season's disaster in College Station, he has plummeted to 20th — the steepest fall of any coach still in the top 25.

He trails other Southeastern Conference coaches Alabama's Nick Saban, Georgia's Kirby Smart, LSU's Brian Kelly, Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin, Tennessee's Josh Heupel and Kentucky's Mark Stoops.

"That national title Fisher won at Florida State no longer carries him in these rankings," CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli wrote. "While I can't speak for everyone else, I know Jimbo fell in my rankings because of his refusal to adjust."

Fornelli said Fisher "still recruits well," as he hasn't had a recruiting class below 11th since 2019 and boasted the top class in 2022, but that his offensive scheme is like "trying to pound square pegs into round roles."

"Maybe hiring Bobby Petrino means he's finally adapting, or maybe it'll be the same old Jimbo," Fornelli said. "We could see him climb to the top 10 quickly if it's the former ... but if it isn't?"
