'Our MVP of Spring': Aggies' Jimbo Fisher Praises Noah Thomas, Receiving Corps
As the Texas A&M Aggies head into the season likely with Conner Weigman under center, he will have no shortage of talent to throw to.
Everyone in College Station knows the four key pass-catchers returning in 2023 in receivers Evan Stewart, Moose Muhammed III and Ainias Smith and tight end Donovan Green, but head coach Jimbo Fisher told CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd which in the receivers room impressed him in spring ball.
"Noah Thomas was our MVP of spring. He was phenomenal," Fisher said. "Evan Stewart is a guy that you can hopefully move around. Moose Muhammad came on and can move around and make unbelievable catches. Ainias has the ability to go in the backfield and do things. The versatility he gives us is great."
Stewart's coming off All-Southeastern Conference Freshman Team honors in 2022 in which he hauled in 53 passes for 649 yards and a pair of scores, while Muhammad was a close No. 2 with 38 receptions, 610 yards and four touchdowns.
Thomas caught just five passes in 11 games last season, but two went for touchdowns. He provides depth to the receiver room whose top-four returning receivers accounted for 58.1 percent of catches, 67.7 percent of yards and 55.6 percent of the touchdowns.
The Aggies' third-best receiver last season was former running back De'Von Achane. Fisher isn't worried about the drop off in running back pass-catching production after Achane's departure for the NFL.
"Our backs can all catch the ball," Fisher said. "They didn’t play a lot, but they’re very talented and can do it. There’s a lot of personnel groups and formations that we can use and get guys the ball that I’m very excited about.”
