Bobby Petrino Offense Helping D.J. Durkin, Aggies Defensive Preparation

The Texas A&M Aggies have a fall camp chess match each day between offensive and defensive coordinators Bobby Petrino and D.J. Durkin.
In this story:

The Texas A&M Aggies brought in offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino for one reason: call an innovative offense that takes responsibilities off of head coach Jimbo Fisher's plate.

However, a positive repercussion is that it's helping out an Aggies defense see a lot of different formations, motions and play calls in fall camp. Defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin didn't personally know Petrino, but knew his track record and learned about his pedigree pretty quick.

"He has been a tremendous addition to our staff for our team," Durkin said. "I love going against him every day. He prepares you as a defense to be ready for a lot of things. I think he's a tremendous football coach. There's been noticeable help for our staff and our players as we've gone through spring and now into training camp."

Petrino's offenses are known for being well-oiled explosive machines that rack up yards and points in bunches. Over 20 years as either an offensive coordinator or head coach, Petrino's offenses have produced 400 yards per game 16 times and 30 points per game 15 times.

Last year, Texas A&M's defense allowed 21.2 points and 365.2 yards per game, so facing a projected uptick from the Aggies' Petrino-led offense may better those averages in 2023.
