The new Texas A&M football season is only 35 days away. And as the Aggies prepare to begin their non-conference schedule beginning in September, ESPN has published its annual list of the best 2023 recruits.

The Aggies, of course, boast one of the best recruiting classes for the 2023 cycle, and ESPN has selected defensive lineman DJ Hicks for a special honor.

Hicks was named the "most powerful" true freshman on the defensive line, as the Paetow (Katy, Texas) High School product is currently ranked as the No. 8 best prospect in ESPN's 300 rankings.

“Among the most explosive players in this class, Hicks plays with great effort and tenacity. There often seems to be a wake of carnage in his path. He will fire off the ball and be a disruptive force, but you see his power when he meets resistance. He consistently jolts blockers and powers through them. The son of a high school coach, he knows the game well to match his power. He should be a factor for the Aggies in Year 1.”

Hicks' natural tools give him a unique opportunity to immediately step in and become a contributor on an already stacked defensive line in 2023. As stout as the defense was last season, there is room for improvement. A&M gave up 208.8 yards rushing per game in 2022 and somehow managed to register just 19 sacks all season.
